Alright, let's give this a whirl. My first post to the Dutch & Such blog... actually my first post on any blog. Regardless, this is an occasion worthy of some reflection, so here it goes.
When Anna and I first started dating more than 10 years ago we would always daydream about things we wanted to do in our future lives together. Anna, being the fan of writing things down, would turn these ideas into lists. Some of the items on these lists would change as we got older but on nearly every list we've made there was a long term distant goal of one day living abroad together in Europe. To now be within 24 hours of seeing that dream come to fruition has me struggling to fully articulate the gravity of the situation. Simply put, I am physched!
The weeks leading up to our actual sendoff have been filled with smaller sendoffs with all of our family and friends. It has been fun to see the genuine excitement coming from people who have had similar experiences in their lives. Anna's grandma, for example, lived in England, Italy, Switzerland, and Egypt for most of her 20's and into her 30's (I think). When we told her that we were just starting to think about the possibility of moving to Europe for a school year or two she was nothing but encouraging. "Do it!" she said supportingly.
Listening to Anna's grandma tell stories about her adventures living in Europe makes me really see this for what it is - this is our opportunity to have our own european adventure and create memories together that we will be sharing with our grandchildren decades later. Expecting formative, life-changing experiences may be setting the bar too high but maybe not. Time will tell. Either way, we're in for one helluva ride and I could not be more.... well, physched!
