Mykonos the town was beautiful - every corner was covered in bougainvillea and blue accents, and the white washed walls made the entire place feel like a cloud... that is a cloud with stray cats, abandoned buildings, and lots and lots of tourists. Being the only main town on Mykonos the island, Mykonos town was pretty much a big tourist trap for visitors. As a matter of fact, the entire island was pretty much centered around the tourist industry. Driving around the island (we stayed on the opposite side of the town) you would see how undeveloped the rest of the area was - hills of dirt with rows of stone fences, sparse white buildings and homes, and few are far between shops and restaurants outside of the beach communities. Since we were visiting at the end of the tourist season, my my taxi driver explained to me how most of the island was shutting down and the "residents" were getting ready to head back to the main land (Athens) for the winter season. While the entire island was beautiful and I'm so glad I was able to experience it, it wasn't what I had pictured when imagining Greece. The white buildings were beautiful, the light was golden and stunning, and the blue accents made for epic photos, but the island as a whole was much more deserted and arid than I pictured. Besides the bougainvillea, because those beauties were everywhere.
